I see red, I see red, I see red. Hot accent colour.

WHO Bathroom Warehouse has helped out with a number of bathroom renovations in a popular strata apartment building at Coolangatta. The building was completed in the mid-1990s and any apartments with their original interiors intact, even if well maintained, have become tired-looking and dated. The building’s vintage has been reflected in lower asking prices, however, creating opportunities for some first home-buyers to add value to their investment by undertaking renovations.

“We couldn’t change the layout of the main bathroom after we bought our unit but we wanted a fresh new look,” said Rebecca J., co-owner of an apartment with her sister, Belinda. “I’ve got the main bedroom, which has an ensuite. Belinda has the second bedroom and shares the main bathroom with our guests.”

Keeping the same layout with fixtures and fittings to avoid moving the existing plumbing, the raised edges of the Jamieson built-in bath (by Olivia Ellen) dovetails neatly under the tiled wall on three sides, and the tiled floor is protected from shower over-spray by the sparkling bath screen (by Klarga).

A pair of Samantha hot-and-cold wall taps (by Banff, model #12094) controls the flow of water into the bath through the Samantha swivel wall spout. The Sarah three-function hand-held shower head (by Banff) is controlled by a Samantha III wall mixer, and attached to a Samantha wall-mounted shower rail with Silver Flex hose (by Banff).

The great-value Tilly III vanity cabinet (by Hannaford) combines roomy drawers with translucent doors over shelving. Topping the vanity cabinet is a Lysandt (by Harry James) 1200 integrated vanity top with basin in beautiful, hard-wearing Micro Crystal. Matching the other tapware in the bathroom is the Samantha II basin mixer (by Banff).

The Gear close-coupled toilet suite (by William Douglas) was compatible with existing plumbing and fits neatly between the vanity unit and bath. The double towel rail is from the Duo SR range (by Vanna), which comes with both square and round wall-plate options, the round version used in this instance.

“All of the main bathrooms in our entire building have the same layout, so we wanted to do something really different with our tiling,” Rebecca said. “One day when we were down at the WHO Bathroom Warehouse showroom in Tweed Heads, looking around at fittings, and we saw these amazing red tiles used in one of their display bathrooms. They reminded us of the red crocodile handbag that Belinda bought on holidays in Europe last year. We thought – why not? We both like red and we’d already used red as the accent colour for the glass splash-backs in our new kitchen. There is no window in our main bathroom so it needed a bit of livening-up, and this bright red wall with its unusual texture makes a real impact.”
