Vanity Benchtops

Thinking of including a vanity in your bathroom instead of the pedestal that holds the basin and only hides the plumbing connecting the basin tap? You’re not alone. Many homeowners are considering this shift from pedestal to vanity with the hopes of increasing storage space and adding a touch of luxury to their bathroom.

This transformation needs to be overseen carefully, however, as there are many elements you must think about before making a final decision. Let’s just say you can’t only think about matching the colours of the vanity to your wall!

What should you consider?

Each vanity comprises a few elements including the basin, basin tap, vanity benchtop, and vanity storage. From choosing the type and make of the basin, basin tap, and vanity benchtop to whether you want drawers or door cupboards in your vanity storage unit, there are plenty of preferences you need to decide before hitting that purchase button.

Out of all these elements, the vanity benchtop is the most important element because it’s one of the most noticeable components of any vanity. Choosing a benchtop for your bathroom vanity unit, therefore, must be done carefully.

Types of vanity benchtops

The material you choose for your vanity benchtop depends on the look you’re trying to achieve, who will be using that bathroom, and how much time you are willing to spend on maintenance and cleaning.

Firstly, think about the theme and aesthetic of your bathroom. Since you’re going from a pedestal to a vanity unit, you’re going away from a traditional theme to a more modern one.

Secondly, think about who will be using the bathroom. Is it your family, guests or is it just you and your partner?

Finally, think about how much time you can spend cleaning and maintaining your vanity benchtop. The types of vanity benchtops you can use include:

Wood:These benchtops are a little difficult to maintain as they can easily stain and require plenty of work to keep clean. They’re not very ideal for a family home or an ensuite as they can get a little messy when there’s water involved.

Glass: These can be eye-catching but they’re highly vulnerable to breakage. They can easily crack and once that happens, they’re almost impossible to mend; you might end up replacing your glass benchtop, which is usually a costly affair.

Natural stone:This is the most expensive material in terms of vanity benchtops but they are a favourite among homeowners because of the look of luxury they add to the home. However, natural stone is a porous material, meaning they absorb and retain water. This allows stains to stick to the surface, making it very difficult to clean and maintain.
Porcelain: Porcelain accessories are relatively cheap. These benchtops, however, are prone to chipping and cracking and can easily become a bacteria-rich environment if they crack. They also come in only white and opaque finishes and that’s always a deal-breaker.

Acrylic and resin: These type of benchtops are practical, versatile, and inexpensive, making them a crowd favourite. They come in a variation of colours and finishes, making them easy to mix and match and create different aesthetics. The resins used in the manufacturing process help create a non-porous surface, making quartz benchtops resistant to stains, heat, and scratches, saving you a ton of time in terms of cleaning and maintenance.

You don’t need heavy-duty cleaning agents too - just soap and water will do the trick.
